About Image to Base64

Drop an image in and get its data URI, plus the CSS background-image, HTML <img> and Markdown lines ready to paste - with an alt-text box so the snippets are accessible from the start.

Base64 makes a file about a third larger, and a data URI cannot be cached separately from the file that contains it, so the tool shows the encoded size and warns when linking to the image would be faster. For SVG it also offers the percent-encoded form, which is smaller than Base64 and renders identically.

The file is read and encoded by your own browser; nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. 1Choose an image or drop it on the box.
  2. 2Write alt text so the HTML and Markdown snippets are accessible.
  3. 3Check the encoded size against the warning.
  4. 4Copy the data URI or the snippet you need.
