Compress PDF

Yes. Only the images embedded in the document are re-encoded; the text, fonts, vector artwork, links, annotations, form fields and page order are copied across untouched. Many PDF compressors work by rendering each page to a picture, which makes the file much smaller and turns the whole document into an image you cannot search, select or copy from. This one does not do that.

There was nothing to compress. A PDF of pure text and vector artwork is already close to as small as it gets, and the savings here come from photographs and scans. A scanned contract can often drop by 70 to 90 percent; a report typed in Word may not move at all, and we will tell you that rather than pretending otherwise.

No, and that is deliberate. Unlock it in your own PDF reader, save an unlocked copy, and compress that. We would rather not have a password field at all than ask you to type a password into a web page.

You can set a target and the tool will try progressively stronger image settings to reach it, but it cannot promise. The floor is whatever the text, fonts and vector content weigh, and no image setting goes below that. We will aim for the size you choose, and the final result depends on the document.
