Hatta mountain day — kayaking, dam viewpoint and heritage village
An hour-and-a-half from Dubai, the Hatta exclave gives you turquoise reservoir kayaking, mountain hiking trails and a restored Emirati heritage village — all in a half-day.

Hatta is a mountainous exclave of Dubai surrounded on three sides by Oman, and it's the closest thing the emirate has to a hill station. Reach it in 90 minutes via E44 from central Dubai. The road climbs from sea-level desert through the Hajar Mountains and the temperature drops a noticeable 5-7°C.
Highlights
Hatta Dam and kayaking
The turquoise reservoir behind Hatta Dam is the area's signature attraction. Single and tandem kayaks rent for AED 60-100 per hour from the Hatta Kayak centre at the dam wall. Pedal boats and stand-up paddleboards are also available. The water is calm and shallow at the edges; bring a hat, sunscreen and water shoes.
Hatta Heritage Village
A restored 200-year-old mountain settlement with stone houses, a falaj irrigation system and a small museum. Entry is free, takes about 60 minutes to walk through, and gives a more grounded view of Emirati mountain life before oil than the polished Dubai narrative.
Hatta Wadi Hub
An activity zone with zip-lines, mountain bikes, axe-throwing and an obstacle course — pay-as-you-go pricing per activity (AED 50-200 each). Good if you have kids over 8.
When to go
October to March is comfortable for outdoor activities. April to September daytime temperatures still hit 35-40°C; if you go in summer, start before 09:00 and be off the trails by 11:30. Friday afternoons get busy with weekenders.
Border note
The most direct route used to dip briefly into Oman, but the new E44 expressway (opened 2024) stays inside UAE territory the entire way. You don't need a passport for the drive.
